Winter Park Library for More Than Just Books
Public libraries have long been a center for community connection, information, and learning. In today’s fast paced, digital world, libraries have had to compete against instant downloads and the latest apps to get regular visitors. The Winter Park Library is one that has been successful at keeping the community integrated with what a library has to offer. This important institution is more than just a building with books. There are a variety of programs in place and planned for at the Winter Park Library, reaching out to all age groups, and their efforts have been noticed.
So much so that the Aspen Institute, a leading international organization focused on fostering enlightened leadership and open, educational dialogues, will be holding its first Dialogue on Public Libraries this month in Winter Park. This is one of just five locations across the nation where these dialogues will be held. Winter Park was chosen for the innovative approach the library has taken in keeping the community connected and actively interested in the library. The Aspen Institute sees the Winter Park Library as a model to follow for the rest of the country when it comes to attracting one of the toughest age groups, young adults, aged 18-25. Ideas and principles will be discussed during the forum which will result in a report from the Aspen Institute providing library systems across the country with suggestions to better their community connections.
The Winter Park Library is in the process of having a new building constructed to expand on what they offer the community at large, including event space. Books are not the only items available to borrow. Winter Park has iPad Mini tablets, Kindles, and FitBit activity trackers available as well. Other digital gadgets that members can check out include a GoPro camera, mini green screen, and 3D printer. The Winter Park Library is also working with the city to help provide an historical archive of the city and its residents. Soon, Winter Park residents will be able to digitize their family history at the library, providing even more community connections. Beyond the digital world, the Winter Park Library is also helpful in supporting a healthier lifestyle. With the Checkout Bikes program, adult library members can check out a bike to use free of charge.
