Under I Bridge District Could Unite East and West Orlando
In a recent City of Orlando meeting, the next step was taken to bring the bridge district under Interstate 4 closer to reality. It is anticipated to be a key way to finally unite east and west Orlando, two areas of the city that have long been separated by the freeway. The city council voted to approve an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation, which will provide Orlando the airspace rights required to make the Under-I development come to fruition. Utilizing the land beneath the interstate will literally create a place between the east and west sides of Orlando, and provide great opportunities for new growth in the area.
The core of the plan includes a large urban park running beneath Interstate 4. In 2015, a conceptual presentation of the project highlighted what the City of Orlando hopes to build. The plans include not only a playground and dog walk area, but space for outdoor performances and concerts. There will also be soccer fields and basketball and tennis courts. The new urban park will also have skateboarding ramps and picnic areas, making this a great place for people of all ages. The plans also include space for retail shops to bring in more amenities such as cafes to the new urban park area.
This exciting new development for Orlando will not begin for another 5 years or so, however. There is construction to be completed on I-4, including raising the overpass and removing the existing embankments. The I-4 overhaul is anticipated to be completed sometime in 2021. Once it is, the new park and bridge district development can begin. In support of the Under-I project, the FDOT has contributed $3.5 million to get the plans moving forward. More funding has yet to be acquired. With this first amount of funding, the Orlando City Council will be taking the next steps to continue raising the funds.
This new development will not only unite the east and west sides of Orlando, it will also provide a new and exciting area for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
