Travares Community Creates Community Trail
The community in Travares is doing just what it should, coming together to create a new community feature which can be enjoyed by all. They have come together to build a new pedestrian trail, bringing access to a wonderful natural part of Travares for everyone. It all began with the Golden Triangle YMCA. There are 15 acres of wooded land next to the soccer fields and outdoor basketball courts. This land leads down to Lake Elsie, but until recently, there was not an easy way to get there. But now there is, thanks to the incredible generosity of time, materials, and donations from several businesses and residents of Travares.
The new trail will be opening soon and will bring walkers and joggers down to Lake Elsie and back up again along a 1,500 foot long pathway. The Golden Triangle partnered with the Travares Safe Harbor Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club of Lake County through sponsorships to get the project off the ground. The trail will be managed by all three organizations, making this truly a community space in Travares. Contractors were rallied to help provide needed materials, equipment, and the manpower to lay down a four inch layer of crushed concrete all along the path. Area boy scouts joined forces to clear the path area of branches and help in laying sod along the trail edges.
Without the support of our local contractors, the project could have cost up to $30,000. As this was a community endeavor done without county or city funds, a grass roots approach was needed to make it a reality. Now there will be a new space to encourage residents and visitors to get outside and enjoy a bit of nature. This is a healthy approach to living, and the main goal of the Golden Triangle YMCA. The trail has been made for the community, not to turn a profit. It is open to the public during regular YMCA hours, and it is hoped that more activities such as canoeing or paddle boarding along Lake Elsie will be added soon. There are even plans for a community garden as part of the trail area. This is a trail created to bring community together, and it took the community to work together to make it happen. Let’s get out there and utilize it.
