Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Home
If you are thinking of buying a home, whether you are a first time or seasoned homebuyer, there are several key things to consider. Before making one of the most important decisions in your life, if you take a moment and ask yourself some questions, you can be sure to know if you are ready and prepared to buy. The better prepared you are before you begin looking for a home, the better your home buying experience can be.
The first question may seem a simple question to answer, but it can be a complex one as well. “Why do you want to buy a home?” As you go through the process of buying a home, you will be facing an emotional experience. Buying a home can be stressful, but it can also be very rewarding. If you have a specific reason why you want to buy a home, and you write it down, by keeping the “Why” fresh on your mind can also help keep you focused on your goal. Keeping focused on your goal can help ensure you are happy with the results when it is all done.
Another question to put considerable thought into is “Where do you want to live?” If you are feeling the pull to put down roots and establish a home for several years to come, think about what kind of neighborhood you want to live in. Do you want to keep an urban lifestyle with easy access to public resources? Or is a quieter setting, outside the metro area more to your liking? When you think about where you want to live, are you considering a different city, town, or region? If so, take into account how your move will change your life. Is public transportation nearby if you need it? How long of a commute to work will you have? Are there schools you like for your kids’ to attend? What about entertainment options or recreational access? Make a list of the main aspects of your life. What are your obligations, passions, and pursuits? Will these fit in well with where you want to live?
Once you know why and have an idea of where, you need to ask yourself, “Can I afford to buy a home?” Review your financial records, credit reports, and current budget. Once you gather your personal data, you can use a mortgage calculator to help figure out if you have a good chance to qualify for a loan, how much you may qualify for, and what type of loan options you may have. I strongly recommend completing this step before you begin your home search. You will save a lot of time and enjoy much less stress if you begin your home buying search knowing just how much home you can buy. There are also additional resources to be aware of. You may qualify for down payment assistance from the City of Orlando or Orange County, for example.
