Lake Druid Park Open for Mountain Bikes
It’s not often that a brand-new park opens up, and even more rare, a park dedicated to mountain biking. But Orlando has a new recreation spot it can boast about. After a long process to get the park up and running, Lake Druid Park is Orlando’s first Mountain Bike park and is now open to the public. The park is on former Navy land which was donated as part of a program which provides federal land for park development. You can find Lake Druid Park at the end of Coy Drive, which is an ideal location making future expansions to the park possible, such as waterfront access, a playground, a dog park and possibly even a community garden.
Mountain biking enthusiasts helped ensure the new park project got going. There is a growing community of cyclists in Orlando, and many of them enjoy the rough roads of mountain biking. Here in Orlando that can be a bit of a challenge with our prominence of wetlands. While there are a handful of mountain bike trails in the area around Orlando, there was nothing in town. Those that live in Orlando and love the terrain of mountain biking were seeking a place where they could experience the sport in Orlando. Local enthusiasts were able to work with Orlando City Parks & Recreation to establish Lake Druid Park.
There was a long delay in getting the park built however, as chemicals were found in the grass on the land, a carryover from the Navy occupation of the tract of land. The cleanup was handled by the Navy, but with the time it took, there was concern from the community that the park might never become a reality. Once the cleanup was completed however, additional help came from SORBA, an Orlando mountain biking group. SORBA and others helped to fund some of the $400,000 needed to fully renovate the land and build the three bike tracks in the park. The end result is a main track full of hills, trenches and rises, and a smaller, beginning level kids’ track. There is also a section of the park that riders can take into the trees, giving even more of a feeling of being “off the beaten track”.
Lake Druid Park is a great example of the community and government departments coming together to enhance a public space. So far the park has been popular for mountain bikers; it will be worth watching how it grows in the future and provides even more for the neighborhood.
