Is Winter the Season to Sell Your Home

Now that we are full swing into the holiday season, you may think this is not a good time to sell your home. In fact, the holidays, and winter in general can be a great time to sell. There are some advantages to sellers when it comes to having your home listed during the holiday season. If you are ready to sell your home, I encourage you to consider listing it now and using this time to avoid the spring rush of new listings which happens every year. 

You need not worry about the holidays interfering with your listing and showing your home. If you enjoy decorating for the season, go ahead, you can use this opportunity to help stage your home. A festive atmosphere is attractive to potential buyers and helps create a cozy, family feel to your home. Just don’t go overboard with all that you do. Some holiday lights and garlands will go far along with your traditional holiday decor as long as your home doesn’t disappear beneath it all.

Showings can also be done on an appointment basis so you need not worry about conflicts with gatherings and celebrations. As a Realtor, I recommend discussing your schedule in detail with your agent. Let them know which days are “blackout” days for home viewings. Your realtor can take on the task of organizing viewings so you don’t have to; this is just one of the many reasons it pays to have your own Realtor.

During the winter months, there is also less inventory to compete with so your chances are better at getting the price you want, perhaps even higher should multiple offers come in. This can happen often in winter months as there is also a higher chance that those buyers that are seeking to purchase a home in this season are more motivated to find a home for a variety of reasons. They are more likely to be serious about finding a new home, as opposed to just beginning their search. These potential buyers are more likely to be in need of finding a new home sooner rather than later, and could be willing to pay more.
