Community Connection: Central Florida Fair
Regional fairs offer something for everyone. At the fair, plenty of fun, food and games await fair goers. There are farm exhibitions, and also showcases featuring local craftsmen and artists. The Central Florida Fair is no exception, and a wonderful way to spend the day with family and friends, as well as to connect with our area farmers and crafters. The annual Central Florida Fair begins this February 25th and runs through March 13th, giving us three weekends to eat elephant ears and corn dogs, and try our hand at the ring toss. There are also plenty of rides to bring out the kid in all of us.
The fair is held at the Central Florida Fair and Expo Park in Orlando, but will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays each week. You can get an unlimited ride wristband for $25.00 each, but that does exclude some special rides, such as the mechanical bull and helicopter rides. There are over 100 rides to check out, along with over 100 dance and music groups to entertain on three stages. These fair activities alone would make for a fantastic family day.
The Central Florida Fair at its core is about our agricultural industry and heritage. There will be livestock shows and auctions throughout the fair, many featuring the next generation of farmers and ranchers. These kids will be showcasing their own work with animals such as calves, pigs, rabbits and lambs. The big business of livestock trading is also part of the fair with a Youth Market auction. These auctions provide a working experience for the kids involved in the program, as well as giving members of the community a great opportunity to purchase locally grown, organic meat. Many of the buyers in the auctions can’t use all the meat they purchase so many community organizations benefit as well through the donations they receive from the fair auctions.
In addition to all the livestock, there are competitions for the exhibitors. Over $200,000 in prize money will be awarded. There will be fine arts and crafts including needlecrafts, ceramics, painting and more, along with incredible foods and tasty treats from regional farmers, cooks and bakers. Horticulturists get in on the action with garden and landscape displays. The exhibits include educational information as well. From the Youth 4H and FFA clubs, you and your kids can learn about raising and caring for livestock, including veterinary care.
The Central Florida Fair is also about giving back to the community. As the largest Florida non-profit fair, this is one organization that truly supports our region and those that live here. Thousands of under-privileged kids get to attend the fair for free with the fair’s community support programs. There is also a special day for school groups to get in early to the fair free of charge. Fairgoers can get discounted admission by bringing a couple of cans of non-perishable food on the first day of the fair. It is with community planning and caring that the Central Florida Fair is able to provide such an enriching family and community experience.
