Bike and Walk Lanes in Store for Denning Drive
Winter Park is set to continue its safety mission for pedestrians and bicyclists with a new plan that was just approved for Denning Drive. The Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency approved $500,000 for a new project which will bring Denning Drive in line with the Winter Park mission of transit safety for all. The road has changed over the years from a dirt lane fifty years ago to a four lane road, which has been determined to not really be needed. With an average of 7,500 vehicles using the road daily, there is no significant concern sited toward traffic flow in changing Denning Drive from four lanes to two. The main purpose of this change is to add in pedestrian and bike pathways. The more pathways provided, the safer people will be when choosing to walk or bike.
Through a study conducted on the effects of changing Denning Drive, it has been determined that only a minor delay of less than 5 seconds, would be experienced by drivers on Denning Drive once it is a two lane road, and that is during rush hour and at the intersection with Morse Ave. The wait time at lights is not expected to be affected. The new road design will include either a center turn lane or a median with left turn lanes for each direction, helping to keep the flow of traffic running smoothly.
Those on foot or pedal will gain a bike and pedestrian pathway on one side of Denning Drive and a pedestrian walkway on the other. Trees will be added on both sides providing shade and green space along the road. Plans have not been finalized yet as while the funding was approved by the Winter Park Community Redevelopment Agency, it will also need to be approved by the city commission as a part of the overall budget. Should this go through the project will be ready to get underway.
Safe travel for residents is a plus for any community. When non-motorized routes are available, people have more options for how they get from one place to another. Bicycling and walking are not only great ways to exercises, they also help reduce carbon foot prints locally, another plus when it comes to helping the environment. Walk-ability and Bike-ability also help communities attract new visitors and residents alike. These are features that are often sought after.
